Hi, I’m Keiran. I’m an only child and I love photography, IT, helping others and playing music.
I connected with Canteen when I was 15 after my mum passed away from breast cancer. She was originally diagnosed in 2010 after having a fall at home. After completing grueling radiation and chemotherapy, she entered remission six months later. Five years down the track she had another fall. Having now had the previous experience we rushed her to the hospital where we later found out her cancer had metastasised (moved/duplicated) to her liver.
I closed off to the world after she passed away, not wanting help from anyone. After some motivation from an active Canteen member, I decided to give Canteen a go. This was the BEST DECISION OF MY LIFE! Canteen consists of some of the most encouraging, supportive and caring people I have ever met. Canteen provided me with a group of young people who understood what I was going through and how I was feeling. I wasn’t pressured to tell my story or explain why I was there but rather, I was reassured that it was a safe and judgment-free environment.
At this point, I have participated in recreation days like roller skating or laser tag, weekend camps catered towards where I was in my cancer journey or alternatively having some time out. I have also been fortunate enough to be part of our local leadership team and to attend leadership camps. I’ve become a Canteen youth ambassador as I want to give back to this phenomenal organisation and to inform others of the amazing opportunities that Canteen offers young people.
