Program Spotlight: Good Grief

Rich Text 1

You’re giving young people the opportunity to strengthen their connection to a loved one who has passed away from cancer through Canteen’s Good Grief program. The Good Grief program is a therapeutic and recreational three-day retreat developed by Canteen young people and specialised staff to support young people whose parent or sibling has died from cancer.

Why is Good Grief important?

The death of a parent or sibling is one of the most stressful and traumatic events a young person can experience. Canteen’s mission is to be in the corner of every young person facing cancer, ensuring they don’t have to go through it alone.

What happens at a Good Grief program?

Good Grief enables young people to work with specialised Canteen staff and other young people who are also grieving the death of a loved one. Over the three days, young people participate in workshops and activities which are proven to be beneficial based on research and evaluation conducted by Canteen.

Supporting Young People Through Loss

Some of the workshops include speaking about their loved one, sharing memories and understanding their grief and how it impacts their life.

Good Grief by numbers:

  • 20–30 young people in attendance to allow the safe and secure environment they need
  • Nine staff onsite over the three days to provide specialised support
  • Both over-18s and under-18s programs run to ensure young people are supported by their cohort
  • Over four months of planning to get all the details right

Goals of Good Grief:

💚Normalise the process of grief and loss

💪 Gain strategies for young people to cope with their grief

🤝 Allow young people to recognise their feelings and where they can access support going forward

The impact of your support

Programs like this are only possible because of the generosity of the CanDo Family. Your support enables us to provide life-changing experiences for young people during one of the toughest times in their lives.

Together, we’re ensuring that no young person faces cancer alone.
