At Canteen, we’re privileged to support and share the real-life experiences of young people facing cancer. Their stories illustrate the resilience of our young people when cancer turns their world upside down, and – on the flipside - how the support, connection, and care they receive at Canteen can turn difficult experiences into opportunities for growth and recovery.
Leyla is one of these incredible inspiring young people. Diagnosed with a rare ovarian cancer at the young age of 15, she underwent surgery and chemotherapy, which kept her away from school and activities she loved, like basketball and swimming. Leyla found strength in the support she found at Canteen. Her experience was challenging, but through Canteen’s programs, she was able to connect with peers who understood her journey. Attending the EXPLORE program in WA, Leyla built valuable relationships that she says continue to fill her cup.
One of the most significant supports Leyla received was an exercise bike, funded by one of our generous major gift supporters. This piece of equipment, essential for her physical rehabilitation, has allowed Leyla to regain strength and improve her circulation. The bike has helped her stay active, offering a daily routine that supports her recovery.
Leyla’s mother, Suzanna, expressed profound gratitude to the donors, sharing how their kindness made a lasting impact on Leyla’s recovery and confidence.
